ORPHAN CRISIS IN SOUTH ASIA

This particular part of South Asia has the largest child population in the world. Unfortunately, newest research shows that approximately 4% of the child population in this region are orphans. That’s 20 million children with no family, a number that is projected to increase by 2021. Orphaned children face extreme vulnerabilities, including sex trafficking, forced child labor, HIV/ AIDS, and substance abuse. Many children have lost their parents because of abandonment due to poverty, illness and death.

Even children with families in this part of South Asia face unimaginable hardships. Most do not attend school regularly, as they are pressured to go to work and earn money for their families. Health is also a struggle as early 2 million children born per year in this part of the world do not live to the age of 5. These issues, combined with an unbalanced caste system make orphaned children in South Asia most at risk.

EL SHADDAI RESCUE HOME

El Shaddai Children’s Home first began back in the 1970’s with a mission to rescue children from child prostitution rings in South Asia. After 25 years of operation, both founders passed away and the home went broke. The founder’s families didn’t give up hope as they prayed that God would send someone to help rescue the home. After 12 years of prayer, Reverend Ken Anderson came to visit in 2013 and immediately felt compassion for the home after hearing it’s story. He approached Church of God World Missions with the idea of providing funding to the home and they immediately jumped on board to help.

Today, the home is a safe haven for the most vulnerable  children, including those rescued from the prevalent child prostitution rings in this part of South Asia. Currently, El Shaddai has an animal and vegetable farm to help with sustainability. They have 8 goats that provide dairy, and over a dozen rabbits and chicken to provide protein. They also have rice and other grains growing to provide much needed carbohydrates to keep the children full.

Serving Orphans Worldwide travels to every orphanage we partner with to ensure needs are legitimate and 100% of funds distributed goes to the livelihood of the children.

PROMINENT ISSUES

Abandonment

El Shaddai is located in a poor and rough part of South Asia. Poverty causes most parents to leave their children in order to try and find food and money to provide for them. Family conflict also causes children to slum on the streets because they’re trying to escape dangerous home lives.

Sex Trafficking

Because the home is so close to an area known for its prevalence of child prostitution rings, sex trafficking is a huge issue. Most of the children are rescued from that area in order to keep them from having to be on the streets to work.

Abuse

Abuse is also an issue that drives children out onto the streets. According to UNICEF, over 53% of children in this part of South Asia are subjected to sexual abuse. Most won’t report when it happens because of fear.

HOME

The home consists of older, British style cottages that are used as dorms and a ministry center. The facilities also include a cafeteria and a recreation room, where the boys can enjoy a game of chess and table tennis. The building has electrical wiring and a pour flush latrine for the children to use. It also has a protected dug well and a public tab to provide water to the home.

EDUCATION

All school aged children attend public or private school that are close to the home. El Shaddai takes education seriously, as they see it as a second chance for the children. They have seen children successfully complete school and enroll in college.

FAITH

The home makes sure that their number one goal is reaching Jesus to these children. They all participate in morning and evening prayer every day, as well as devotions. The children also attend church services on Sundays.

HEALTH

The children receive appropriate medical care if the need arises. They currently receive medical attention and care from a private doctor who lives next door.
