ORPHAN CRISIS IN MYANMAR

Myanmar is a country long marred by ethnic and political rebellions since its independence in 1948. What began in 1948 as internal conflict among ethnic minorities turned into one of the world’s longest-running civil wars. The repercussions of these conflicts are still seen today as Myanmar has struggled to maintain internal peace, leading to greater issues. Children suffer deeply from this. UNICEF reports that out of the 1.3 million children born in Myanmar, 92,500 will not make it to their first birthday, and 138,000 will not live to be five. Furthermore, 14,000 children are estimate to have HIV/AIDS, with another 43,000 being orphaned by the disease. Child labor and trafficking are also causes of child exploitation.  These disasters have claimed thousands of lives, and left thousands missing and displaced. As a result, many children were left without parents, and without a home.

NEW LIFE CHILDREN’S HOME

Poverty is a large issue in Myanmar, with about 32 percent of Myanmar’s 50 million population living in extreme poverty. As a result, many of the children at New Life Myanmar have been given up to orphanage care because of financial crisis. Although some of the children here have lost only one parent, often the other parent has been unable to provide for the needs of the child and thus given up parental duties to preserve their own life and the life of the child. New Life Children’s Home does it’s best to provide for the needs of the children, there. This home has been a testimony of God’s provision. They have cared for a child with HIV/ AIDS and provided him with necessary medical visits and treatments. They have also taken on a building/ renovation project to provide better facilities for the children.

Serving Orphans Worldwide travels to every orphanage we partner with to ensure needs are legitimate and 100% of funds distributed goes to the livelihood of the children.

PROMINENT ISSUES

Armed Conflict

Armed conflict in Myanmar has left many children orphaned and in danger. Countless families have been displaced. The conflict has led to a host of human rights issues which pose threats to children in Myanmar.

Destitution

The poverty in Myanmar comes as result of decades of civil unrest. Although once prosperous, as of 2001, Myanmar was one of the poorest countries in the world. Many children are abandoned due to poverty.

Human Trafficking

According to the US State Department’s latest annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report, Myanmar has joined China, Syria and South Sudan as being among the worst for human trafficking.

HOME

In the past, New Life Myanmar rented a home. However, with increases in renting prices, they feared that they would not be able to continue to rent. After prayer and some generous donors, they were about to secure a permanent home for the children. Renovations have been completed, and the children have settled in.

EDUCATION

The children at New Life attend a public school nearby, walking 20 kilometers, or nearly 12 miles, to reach it. For the older students, going on to higher education is a hope that can only become reality if they are able to pay tuition costs. Please consider making those dreams a reality.

FAITH

The directors at New Life desire for their children to grow up to be men and women who honor God. New Life reports that their children enjoy going to church and are developing a heart for God.

HEALTH

The children are blessed to be provided with adequate nutrition through their three meals a day.  The children have received all vaccinations as recommended by their country’s governmental health organization, as well as HIV and other recommended screening tests. Some have come in sick, and receive medical treatments as needed.
