India has the largest child population in the world. However, children there face unimaginable hardships. Most do not attend school regularly, pressured to go to work and earn money for their families. Health is also a struggle, as nearly 2 million of India's 27 million children born per year do not live to the age of 5. For those who do, nearly 40% suffer from malnutrition. Furthermore, the youth mortality rate in India is so high that it accounts for one in every five deaths (of any age) that occur around the world. Tamil Nadu is one of India's most progressive states, rapidly developing as an urban center. Despite its high standing, many challenges remain within its borders. Children are highly vulnerable here because of poverty and caste-related issues. In Tamil Nadu, thousands of children end up as child laborers and are subject to other forms of exploitation.
Destiny Village began in order to provide India's children with a safer way of life.
Destiny Village began in a church building with very few children in 2004. In 2005, this situation led a group of Americans to construct a 14,000 square foot home for orphaned children that now provides a safe refuge for Indian kids. The facility has the capacity to house 108 children, but will need further funding to make that dream a reality. The home takes special care to every child that comes into their care, with many children coming from harsh circumstances. There are so many more children in need. Please consider supporting this home so that many more may find refuge under their care. M. Manoharan, the onsite director, thanks God for everything: “We praise God who helps the weak and weary, destitute, and homeless children through such a great people like you. We have been praying for this for the past 5 years. Our Lord Jesus really heard our prayer. We thank so much those who are sponsoring our Destiny Village Children’s Home.”
Serving Orphans Worldwide travels to every orphanage we partner with to ensure needs are legitimate and 100% of funds distributed goes to the livelihood of the children.
2 prominent issues
Issues have been identified by children who have faced or escaped these struggles in their region of the world.
Although laws exist in India against child labor, many children do not escape the adversities of working dangerous jobs. It is estimated that there are nearly 60 million child laborers in India.
Poverty in India is one issue which puts children at risk for a host of other issues. The World Bank estimates that nearly 22% of India's population is living under the poverty line.
The home is comprised of 4 buildings, making it a beautiful, functional premises. Because of recent support from SOW donors, the home has been able to make necessary upgrades to the home required by the Indian government. However, the home is still in need of funds to install a new roof, a bathroom facility, and a wall, as well as to buy proper bedding and mosquito nets for the children.
The home ensures that the children here receive three meals a day, as well as snacks. The caretakers hope to continue to improve the children's diet. Destiny Village has livestock and farms a plot as well, providing a source of income and stability. The children here are not always able to receive medical care and tests when needed, because many times they are too expensive for the budget to allow. Your support could make all the difference for them.
Destiny Village has seen children come to know the Lord because of their service and care. The home greatly desires to give all of their children their own Bible as they walk with the Lord. This home holds Biblical teaching in high regard, as they seek to show children love and hope in Christ.
It is important to the caretakers at Destiny Village that their children have a quality education. They attend a private school, with a school bus providing their transportation. However, in order to go to school, the children are in need of new shoes and uniforms. Please consider providing this simple necessity so that children in India can have the power of education.
