Alcohol-related deaths accounted for nearly 40% of adult male deaths and 22% of adult female deaths in Ukraine in 2007. This trend of alcoholism and drug addiction is often accompanied by mistreatment, neglect and exploitation of Ukraine's children. Drugs and alcohol have ravaged countless Ukrainian families, leaving innocent children to bear the weight of the consequences that come with their parents’ unfortunate decisions. The Ukraine has struggled with the issue of street children for years, many abandoned due to their parents’ destructive habits. Not to mention, Ukraine is the country worst affected by HIV/AIDS in all of Europe. Because of these many issues, children in Ukraine often wind up on the street where they too are subject to fatal drug and alcohol addictions.
Believers in Alexandria saw the brokenness around them and desired to mend it.
Pearl Orphanage sprang up in the mid-1990s as a local church began to care for homeless children. The Christian community of Alexandria began taking in street children abandoned by their families and realized an opportunity to minister, not only to these marginalized children, but also to their broken families. Pearl Orphanage became a haven of safety and a bright gospel light in its community. Although they have faced many struggles over the years, including an attempted shut-down by the government, Pearl has prevailed as a beacon of hope for Alexandria’s orphans. By God’s grace, they are now recognized by the Ukrainian government. This has given them the opportunity to minister to several children who have been given over to them by the state since then. They consider it a privilege and a blessing to minister to little ones who have often dealt with heart-wrenching tragedy and loss. Today, Pearl Orphanage proudly points out that there are no more street children wandering in their region. With your support, Pearl will continue to provide a place for the orphaned and vulnerable children of Alexandria to receive care, hope, love and gospel truth.
Serving Orphans Worldwide travels to every orphanage we partner with to ensure needs are legitimate and 100% of funds distributed goes to the livelihood of the children.
3 prominent issues
Issues have been identified by children who have faced or escaped these struggles in their region of the world.
Ukraine is the country worst affected by HIV/AIDS in all of Europe. UNICEF estimates that 80% of all infected people are young. The leading cause of transmission is a result of high drug use.
The issue of drug and alcohol abuse has led to higher incidences of child abandonment. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has also contributed to this. Pearl has received children who have also been abandoned due to either disability or poverty.
For many children Ukraine, even their home is not a safe place to be. The most vulnerable children are the ones who are homeless and neglected or who come from poverty stricken families.
Before Pearl Orphanage was officially founded in 1999, the facilities were in poor condition. However, two local churches saw to it that it was restored before the children moved in. In 2009, they were able to build a new building and continue their ministry in the same village. The current building provides adequate space and function for the work at Pearl Orphanage. However, there is still room for improvement in regards to renovations and updates, as well as pavement outside the house. The home is also currently planning to host more children from war torn areas of Ukraine. Please consider helping this home continue to improve and grow.
For the caretakers at Pearl Orphanage, the children's health is of highest importance. Because so many children coming in suffer from malnutrition and sickness, they provide food, medicine, and vitamins to address those needs. A nurse is in their building to tend to the immediate health needs of the children, and they also receive regular health exams. Most importantly, Pearl is seeing children restored from the suffering of their past situations.
Founded on the Christian values of love and care, to this day Pearl Orphanage has a burning passion to give homeless children a place to call home. Ultimately, they pray that their children will find forever homes through adoptive families. Pearl gives the Lord all the praise for the work they have done so far. Children who come into this home will not only have their physical needs met, but also their spiritual ones, bringing about full healing and restoration.
The children receive their education at a public school two kilometers away. It would be a great benefit to them, however, if Pearl Orphanage possessed a bus for transportation, so that the children do not have to walk each day. The children are also in need of school supplies to supplement their education, as well as warmer clothes for the colder weather. Please consider helping this home fully meet the needs of all of their children.
